CHENNAI: The Madras Auto Passengers Association on Friday urged Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to put an end to "fleecing" by autorickshaw drivers by fixing electronic meters that cannot be tampered with.
No proper meters
Association president C. Lakshmi Narain said that the nearly 44,000 autorickshaws in the city did not have proper meters despite a Madras High Court order two years ago to the effect. He urged the Chief Minister to ensure that all vehicles, including the proposed new 5,000 autorickshaws, to be fixed with meters that could not be tampered with. The move, he said, would enable passengers to note the distance and the fare fixed by the Government and pay accordingly. The Government should also give strict instructions to drivers to park vehicles at the stands in an orderly manner and not indulge in bargaining with passengers, he added, while welcoming the concessions announced by the Chief Minister on Thursday.
Concessions
A slew of concessions was announced for autorickshaw drivers in the State, including scaling down the annual Green Tax from Rs.500 to Rs.200 and giving permit for 5,000 new autorickshaws run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas in Chennai city. Around 100 new stands would also be permitted as per requirement. The announcement had noted that the Government would also give loan with subsidy on easy terms through the Tamil Nadu Transport Development Finance Corporation or banks to enable the auto drivers and new aspirants, who wanted to enter the sector, to acquire autorickshaws.
