A treat for finishing vocational training

Staff Reporter

Balaji Seva Trust supports training of orphans

SEA RIDE AS REWARD: The group of youth enjoy an outing to cap the completion of their vocational training.

CHENNAI: It was a mixed crowd that made it to former DGP V. Vaikunth's guest list for an evening at the Chennai Port. Three former prisoners at the Special Prison for Women in Vellore, seven physically challenged boys and a group of schoolgirls from an orphanage spent an hour on the sea as a treat for finishing their vocational training programmes.

They are part of Mr. Vaikunth's project to make people economically self-sufficient. In 2002, the retired officer started the Balaji Seva Trust to support the training of orphans, former prisoners and the physically challenged. For six months, each of the chosen candidates undergoes training in a certain field and is then helped to find a job to earn a living.

About the outing, Mr Vaikunth said: "It is not a luxury to be taken on a ship but it's something to boost their morale."

The trip certainly served its purpose. Vasantha, 23, says she was imprisoned for seven years for the death of someone her brother killed. As she walked through the corridors of the anchored passenger ship Swaraj Dweep after a refreshing ride on a tugboat, she said, "I have never seen anything like this. I've only seen ships in movies."

The movies seem to have inspired quite a few people. The boys from the Government of India Vocational Centre were busy talking about Titanic and discussing who make the most convincing Jack and Rose.

The present batch of women from the Vellore prison has been learning garment design at the Apparel Training and Design Institute.

The boys have been studying about the manufacture of leather products and the girls, all just done with their Class XI exams, have been doing a one-and-a-half month course on desk top publishing.
