Panel to look into wage demands of transport employees

CHENNAI: A long-standing demand of transport corporation employees for a new wage settlement is close to fulfilment with the Tamil Nadu Government constituting a seven-member sub-committee to undertake the preliminary work.

The sub-committee has been asked to submit its recommendations to the Government on or before June 15. The first meeting of the panel was held at the Secretariat on Friday.

According to a government release, the earlier wage settlement entered into during September 1998 had expired necessitating a new settlement. Headed by A.K. Gupta, Special Secretary, Finance (BPE), the sub-committee will collect data from various state transport undertakings (STUs), employees, prepare demands on behalf of the management and suggest measures to meet the employees' demands.

The Managing Directors of STUs will forward demands from trade unions to the Government for processing through the committee.

The panel will also collect details of wages and service conditions of State transport employees in neighbouring Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh and submit them along with the recommendations.

The other members of the committee are: L.J. Singaravelan, S. Kothandapani, R. Vellaiputhiyavan and C.T. Meyyappan, Managing Directors of STUs at Villupuram, Kumbakonam, Salem and Metropolitan Transport Corporation, Chennai; and Ekanthalingam, Joint Managing Director, Transport Development Finance Corporation, Chennai. N. Somasundaram, Deputy Manager (Legal), Chairman's office, Chennai, will be the member-secretary.
