dated May 30, 1955: Govt. and the Press

The Union Home Minister, Pandit Govind Vallabh Pant, has suggested that some method should be devised whereby the Press could be associated with the Government in the sphere of policy-making. Speaking in New Delhi on May 28 at a reception given in his honour by the Press Association, he said, "My own idea is that apart from giving information to the Press or placing before them all the necessary facts to enable them to view things in their correct perspective, we should also seek the assistance of the Press in the solution of the difficult problems to be faced from time to time. I would like them to feel in reality that they are coadjutors with us in serving and advancing the larger interests of the country and the community. Their responsibility is sufficiently onerous, but if they have greater opportunity of offering real assistance in the solution of difficult and ticklish problems, that would enable us to get their viewpoint. Their contribution will be of a more constructive character in the formative stage. Journalists have a vast fund of information; they have opportunities of rubbing shoulders with all classes of people and they can be of great help in giving one an integrated appreciation of the happenings that mark the progress of events."
