BHOPAL: The Vice President, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, has stressed the need to preserve Hindi and said that research should be conducted to find out how it is being attacked from all sides and the ways and means to protect it from the present onslaught. Mr. Shekhawat was speaking as chief guest at a special function held at the Madhavrao Sapre Smriti Samachar Patra Sanghrahalaya (Madhavrao Sapre Memorial Newspaper Museum) in the State capital this evening. The Vice President said that "by saving Hindi, we would be doing a service to the nation and protecting our culture." He suggested that there should be a comprehensive research to find out how Hindi could survive for centuries despite foreign invasions and how it can be protected from the present onslaught. He also announced that he would extend all possible help for research in this direction. Mr. Shekhawat said that while travelling in different parts of the country one finds that the use of Hindi is disappearing from even the milestones that now carry names in only the local languages and English. One wonders how Hindi was going to survive under these circumstances, he said. The Madhya Pradesh Governor, Balram Jakhar, said that the Sapre Museum was a historical institution. This museum should be used by every one and not just the researchers, he added. The Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister, Babulal Gaur, assured all help for the expansion and further development of the museum, which has about 25 lakh copies of newspapers, manuscripts and other documents of archival value and was founded by well-known journalist, Vijaydutt Shreedhar.
