NEW DELHI: Accusing the previous Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance Government of practising the politics of communalism and hatred, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on Sunday charged it with distorting the history by making glaring changes in school curriculum. Addressing a conference organised by the Jamait-e-Ulema-e-Hind here, Ms. Gandhi alleged that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Government did not even spare the history of Indian freedom struggle and presented it in a distorted manner. "What has happened in the past few years has hurt the country and its image abroad," she said. Stating that the present Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government at the Centre has taken action to undo the harm to India's glorious history through textbooks, Ms. Gandhi said all the "evil designs" of the pervious Government in the field of education have been exposed and efforts were being made to see that it does not affect communal harmony and peace. She assured that all measures would be taken to help minorities in the country. Recalling the measures being taken by the Centre for the welfare of the minorities, the Congress president said repealing of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) was one such step. "The POTA Review Committee had released all those framed under this Act," she added. Ms. Gandhi further said the new generation has to be prepared to face the challenges confronting the nation. "This is possible only if there is unity in society and peace prevails in the country," she asserted.
