VIJAYAWADA: Primary and upper primary schools in the State should gear up for the proposed Central Act that will make education compulsory for all children in the school-going age. The Minister for School Education, Neduramalli Rajyalakshmi, addressed teachers, educationists and parents at Vidya Vedika, a regional conference organised for Nalgonda, Khammam, West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts here on Saturday. She asked them to suggest ways to provide quality education to children studying in primary and upper primary schools in the State. The Minister said there was a need to improve the standards of education in primary schools. "Children are taught more than just alphabets and mathematics in these schools, but they are not learning anything in primary schools," the Minister said. She said that the State Government was keen that schoolteachers reside in their place of posting, but this was easier said then done. Now the Government was considering making it compulsory for teachers to reside at least in the same mandal.
There was a proposal to establish "school complexes'' with library, laboratory, computer, radio, television and other facilities so that students of other Government schools could make use of the facilities .
Door-to-door drive
Children, who had dropped out of school or had never been to school, would be enrolled in a big door-to-door drive from June 6 to 11. The Krishna district Collector, Naveen Mittal, presided. The Director of School Education, K. Ramakrishna Rao, also spoke.
