HYDERABAD: Most of the 773 civil assistant surgeons working in various Government establishments, including primary health centres, on contract basis are getting absorbed on a regular basis, allaying fears of the State Government Contract Employees' Federation. The Government, which recently issued a notification to recruit over 1,000 doctors, had already ordered that the surgeons be continued in their services, the Principal Secretary, Health, I.V. Subba Rao, told The Hindu . Most of the surgeons are getting absorbed, he said, adding that weightage was being given to them in the selection process. While 55 per cent would be the consideration for their qualifications, 45 per cent would be given preference in view of their experience, Dr. Rao explained. "Their jobs are absolutely safe, the federation need not have any apprehensions on that score," he sought to assure. Prior to the Government's decision to recruit doctors, the federation was apprehensive about the continuation of contract surgeons as it was unsure whether the Congress Government would honour its pre-election promise. A.V. Nageswara Rao, convener of the federation, had expressed fears last month that removal of the surgeons was imminent after the notification on recruitment of doctors was issued. However, the experience of working since four years seemed to have turned the pendulum in favour of the surgeons.
