NEW DELHI: The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, on Sunday asked organisations promoting mountaineering to reach out to the youth and promote the challenging sport but without ignoring preservation of the fragile Himalayan eco-system. Speaking at the 40th anniversary celebrations of the first successful Indian expedition to Mount Everest in 1965 organised by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation here, Ms. Gandhi said mountaineering might not attract mass participation or enjoy popularity like the game of cricket, but it helps in developing an individual's character and inculcates in him the feeling of team work. She said mountaineering nurtures qualities of character that were vital. "Being so close to nature in all its power and beauty, to have the courage to test oneself in the mountains, to approach them with humility as well as confidence, to have endurance and self reliance -- all this must surely make for better human beings," she asserted. "Indian mountaineering is usually said to have begun with the ascent of Trishul in 1951 by Gurdial Singh. But mountaineering in India received its biggest fillip after the first ascent of Everest by Tenzing (Norgay) and (Edmund) Hillary in 1953," she said, adding that India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru took great interest in this achievement. The Congress president also said schools and universities should be encouraged to send more students to walk in the valleys and to climb the summits. "At the same time, we must remember that the Himalayas are a fragile eco-system. Many of these places are sparsely inhabited, but population pressure in growing. " On the occasion, Ms. Gandhi also released a monograph on the members of the Indian expedition and a "Special Day Cover". She also presented mementoes to the members of the 1965 expedition.
