BANGALORE: A large number of residents of Janapriya Township at Kadabagere, off Magadi Road, on Sunday staged a demonstration protesting against frequent power failure. The residents said there has been no power for over 18 hours a day in the past week. They said complaints to the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) station in Nelamangala were of no help. Power failures for long hours disrupt life in the township as the association is unable to pump water to overhead tanks. The problem was acute on Saturday when residents had to carry water from tankers. "I had to go to work on Saturday without having a bath," said a flat owner. "Many senior citizens live in our apartments. Some of them live on the third floor. Even they are forced to take water from tankers," said B. Subramani, manager at the office of the Janapriya Township Flat Owners' Association. He said the BESCOM officials gave reasons such as tripping of power lines and failure of jumpers. But they have been giving the same reasons for several months now. "They should do something and ensure that power supply is not affected. There are over 4,500 people living in 780 flats here," he said. A resident said his daughter studying in the third standard has not been able to study in view of power failure. She has been insisting that he should shift to a place where there is better power and water supply. "I have emergency lights. But you need power to re-charge them," he said. "A whiff of rain is enough for power to go off. Often we don't have power for the whole night. This has been the situation for several years now during the monsoon," said another resident. For the people living in nearby layouts that have come up recently, nightlong power failures are a security hazard.
