dated May 31, 1955: Burden on film industry

At the annual general body meeting of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce held on May 30 in the Chamber premises in Madras, Mr. S.S. Vasan was re-elected President, Mr. A.V. Meiyappa Chettiar was elected Vice-President, Mr. B. Nagi Reddi and D. Kemparaj Urs, Honorary Secretaries, and Mr. K.S. Narayana Iyengar, Honorary Treasurer. The meeting adopted the annual report of the Chamber for the year 1954-55, according to which the incidence of taxation on the trade continued to be as heavy and unbearable as it had been during the past years. Apart from entertainment tax, the show tax had been made a permanent levy in Madras and had been extended for a further term in Andhra. The recommendations of the Taxation Enquiry Commission, before whom the Chamber had had the opportunity of letting in evidence, were being studied and necessary action was proposed to be taken in consultation with the Film Federation of India.
