THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, demanding the amending of the People's Representation Right to confer voting right on Non-Resident Indians. Mr. Chandy pointed out in the memorandum, copies of which were forwarded to the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, and the Minister for Non-Residents Affairs, Jagdish Tytler, that majority of the people of Kerala origin in America, Canada and Europe were citizens of those countries. But those in the Gulf countries would return and they maintained close relations with their homeland. In these circumstances, if voting rights were conferred on them they would be able to participate in the next general election. It would also be a good return gesture to a section which made significant contributions for the economic growth of the country, he said.
