ALAPPUZHA: A two-day training camp for social and health workers deployed in the tsunami-affected areas, organised by the Department of Psychiatry of the Alappuzha Medical College with the cooperation of the World Health Organisation, began on Vandanam campus of the Medical College on Monday. Inaugurating the camp the Alappuzha district panchayat president, K.H. Babujan, said the social and psychological problems faced by the tsunami-affected people should be taken into consideration while rehabilitating the affected people. Around a hundred people, who include workers of the National Literacy Mission and the Nehru Yuva Kendra, are participating in the camp. The camp members will work in the tsunami-affected Arattupuzha and Pattanakkad panchayats in the district after the training. A psychologist and a social worker would supervise the future activities of the camp members at the Tsunami-affected areas. The Principal of the Medical College, A.V. Rema Devi, presided over the function. The district medical officer, P.N. Velayudhan, released the handbook for health workers. Leading psychiatrists took classes on various subjects at the camp, which will conclude on Tuesday.
