PORT BLAIR: The only active volcano in India on the Barren Island in the Andamans started emitting smoke on Friday, defence sources said on Monday. "Defence personnel who were in the vicinity have witnessed the billowing smoke and flame from the volcano from a distance of about four nautical miles," they said. Commander Subodh Kumar, Public Relations Officer for Commander-in-Chief of the Andaman and Nicobar Command, said here that the billowing of smoke seemed to be intermittent. Official sources said the volcano had erupted in 1991 and 1994-95, after remaining dormant for about 117 years. The Barren Island is about 140 km northeast of Port Blair and is about 3 km in diameter. It has a big crater, about 0.5 km from the shore, they added. The safe-flying height now would be 3,000 feet. PTI reports: A team from the military and para-military forces landed on the Island on Saturday. They experienced a hot breeze and found themselves stepping on fresh lava. DIG of Coast Guard Commander S. P. S. Basra said, "Earlier, we have taken patrol teams right up to the crater. But on that day, it was difficult to go beyond a certain point."
