Militants hit back; 20 killed

Atul Aneja

MANAMA: Unfazed by the offensive on resistance strongholds, Iraqi guerillas have, for a second day in a row, targeted security forces, causing many casualties.

A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a medical centre in the Iraqi town of Hilla where army and civil service recruits were undergoing a medical examination. Another bomber detonated his explosives among a crowd of policemen who had assembled to protest against the decision to disband their unit. At least 20 persons were killed and 96 wounded in the double attack.

The area was covered with pools of blood, shreds of cloth and footwear.

On Sunday night, Iraqi fighters killed at least 16 persons in suicide attacks in and around Baghdad.

Guerillas have stepped up their attacks soon after the Iraqi authorities said they had launched "operation lightning" — an offensive in Baghdad that aims to undermine the armed resistance inside the city. American officials said that they had arrested a General in the army of former President Saddam Hussein, who was a member of his Fedayeen secret police.

But in intensifying psychological warfare, a group loyal to Jordanian militant Abu Musab Al Zarqawi claimed responsibility for the twin bombings in Hilla.

A day earlier, a website used by Zarqawi's group that is supposedly affiliated to the Al Qaeda said the latest U.S. backed offensive was futile.

Meanwhile U.S. troops have arrested Mohsen Abdel Hamid, a top leader of the Sunni dominated Iraqi Islamic party. The cause of the detention is not yet known, but Sunni groups have spearheaded the resistance to the two years old U.S. occupation.
