JD(S) unhappy with coalition Government's performance

Special Correspondent

`There is no coordination between the two coalition partners'

BANGALORE: Two days before the byelections to the Shimoga parliamentary and the Chamarajpet Assembly constituencies, the Janata Dal (Secular) has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the Congress-led coalition Government in the State. The Janata Dal (S) is a partner in the Government but is fighting the byelections on its own.

For the Janata Dal (S) the completion of one year of the coalition Government is not a matter for jubilation as is the case with the Congress. It is an occasion for expression of its many grouses about the way the Government is functioning. The dissatisfaction and the criticism of the Government have been expressed by the Working President of the State unit of the party, H.D. Kumaraswamy.

Mr. Kumaraswamy, who campaigned for the party candidate, Zameer Ahmed Khan, in the Chamarajpet Assembly constituency here on Monday, told presspersons that the party was in no mood to celebrate the completion of the first year in office of the Government. The performance of the Government, led by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, is far from satisfactory. There is no coordination and understanding between the two ruling parties in the implementation of the policies, he said. Mr. Kumaraswamy alleged that the Congress had failed to keep its promises made at the time of formation of the Government. Appointment of heads to various government-owned corporations has not been made because of the Congress leaders' "arrogance", he said. As the people are unhappy with the Government's performance, the Congress has brought the film star and MP, Govinda, to Shimoga to entice the electorate, he alleged.

The Congress Ministers transferred many Indian Administrative Service and Indian Police Service officials without consulting the Janata Dal (S) Ministers. The Congress Ministers and leaders are treating the Janata Dal (S) MLAs "indifferently".

The Maharashtra Governor, S.M. Krishna, who had represented the Chamarajpet constituency for six months, had, instead of nursing the constituency, toured foreign countries and visited London to watch the Wimbledon Tournament. The voters are angry with the Congress for not responding to their basic problems, he said.
