Bangalore: Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji of Udupi Puthige Math consecrated the idols of Sri Krishna, Sri Hanuman and the Mrithika Brindavanam of Sri Raghavendra Swamy at Pratapaditya Road, South Kolkata, recently. Old-age home coming up

Five selected for Kayaka Samman

Gulbarga: The former Minister B.T. Lalitha Naik is among the five people selected for the Kayaka Samman instituted by the Udyayonmukha Yuva Barahagarara Balaga in Gulbarga. The balaga president, Doulatray Patil, told presspersons in Gulbarga on Sunday that the others selected for the honour are the writer Linganna Satyampet, short story writers Chandrakanth Kusnoor and Balachandra Jaishetty and K.S. Chaitra, for writing in Kannada on health issues. B. Jayashree, theatre artiste, will present the samman here on June 10. — Staff Correspondent

HIV-positive people to meet

MANGALORE: The Karnataka Positive Women and Child Network (KPWCN), a non-governmental organisation, will organise a State-level meet of HIV-positive people at Mulki, near here, on June 12 and 13, Veenadhari, convener or the organisation, has said. The objective is to instil confidence among HIV positive persons that they can lead a normal life and dispel wrong notions about HIV and AIDS. Ms. Veenadhari said 200 HIV-positive people will participate in the meet, which will be held at Chitrapu near Mulki. Closure of college opposed

BANGALORE: Sri Visvesha Teertha Swamiji of Pejawar Mutt in Udupi and two BJP MLCs — Ramachandre Gowda and K. Balakrishna Bhat — have opposed the Government's plan to close down Sri Chamarajendra Sanskrit College at Chamarajpet here. The college was established in the late 1920s by the Dewan of princely Mysore, Sir Mirza Ismail, to promote the study of Sanskrit among non-Brahmins. The Education Department recently recommended the closure of the college from the current academic year as only a few students are seeking admission, according to Sathyanarayana Bhat, organising secretary, Sanskrita Bharati. — Special Correspondent

Quota for women: campaign planned

Bidar: The Janawadi Mahila Sanghatane will launch a State-wide campaign demanding early passage of the women's reservation Bill in Parliament. "We will urge the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to ignore the opinions of leaders such as like Lalu Prasad and Mulayam Singh Yadav and present the bill in the Parliament without changes," the sanghatane State unit convenor, K. Neela. told presspersons here on Monday. A national-level rally and workshop will be organised in Bidar in July to train activists and create public opinion, she said. — Staff Correspondent

Three killed in road accidents

Bidar: Three people died in two separate accidents on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway in Basavakalyan taluk on Sunday.

Gunderao Kharosa, 31, and Premnath Govind, 55, from Ousa in Maharashtra, died on the spot when a tempo collided with a lorry on the highway.

Shivkumar Basavaraj Kallur, 22, died when the two-wheeler he was riding collided with a tempo on the highway in Rajeshwar. Cases have been registered at the traffic police station. — Staff Correspondent

Man hit by train

Bidar: A man was killed when a train hit him when he was trying to cross an unmanned railway crossing in Kamalnagar in Aurad taluk on Sunday.

According to the railway police, Hanumant Ramanna, 45, died on the spot. A case has been registered at the Bidar railway police station. — Staff Correspondent

Man drowns

Bidar: A man drowned in a pond on the Mailar Mallanna Temple premises in Bhalki taluk on Sunday. Mohanrao Kishanrao Metre (32) of Hyderabad had gone for a wedding to Udgir in Maharashtra. He reportedly stopped at Mailar while returning to Hyderabad. Police said he did not know how to swim. A case has been registered at the Dhannura police station.

Struck by lightning

Raichur: Two persons were killed on the spot and four were injured when they were struck by lightning at Galag village of Deodurga taluk on Saturday night.

The police said that a few labourers had gone to a field near the village to collect hay. They were standing under a tree when lightning struck them. The dead have been identified as Mamu Nayappa (24) and Ramappa (40). Chennayya (50), Hanumanna (24), Manamma (23), and Yellappa (25) were injured. The Jalahalli Police have registered a case.

Girl dies of burns

Raichur: Geeta (14), daughter of Phakeerappa, who was injured seriously when her clothes caught fire when she was cooking in Pudi Camp of Manvi taluk on Friday, died at the Raichur District Hospital on Sunday. The Manvi Police have registered a case.

Toddy seized

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Rangangouda , Dodda Basawaraj, Nallangi Narasimhalu and Thimmappa and seized 265 litres of spurious toddy while they were allegedly selling it in Sriramnagar Camp, Dinni and Turkundona villages in Raichur taluk on Sunday. The arrested have been remanded in judicial custody. The Yergera Police and City West Police have registered cases. — Staff Correspondent

Huts gutted

Raichur: Two huts belonging to Indrasena were destroyed in a fire in Pagadadinni village of Sindhanur taluk on Saturday. Foodgrains and other household articles worth Rs. 4 lakhs were destroyed in the accident. The Sindhanur Rural Police have registered a case.

Bidar: Residents of Eden Colony in the city staged a rasta roko demanding basic facilities such as water and power supply and roads and drains, in Bidar on Monday. They forced the Commissioner, S. Tippesh, to give them a written assurance that he will take steps to provide the facilities immediately.— Staff Correspondent

Office-bearers of mutt's trust panel

HUBLI: B.D. Hegde has been appointed chairman of Sri Siddharoodha Swami Mutt Trust Committee, according to a press release by the mutt. At a meeting held here under the chairmanship of the outgoing chairman, S.S. Hasabi, the decision on the appointment was taken. The other office-bearers of the committee are Girijadevi K. Educational institutions warned

HUBLI: The Deputy Commissioner, Gourav Gupta, has warned educational institutions against collecting donations for admissions. A press release issued here said that he has directed the institutions to collect only the prescribed fee from students. Parents can complain to the Deputy Director of Public Instruction if they come across educational institutions seeking donations. — Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Applications have been invited for disbursement of loans under the Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana for 2005-06. Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, ex-servicemen, physical challenged persons, and women aged between 18 and 45 and those from the general category aged between 18 and 35 can apply. Reid and Taylor employees protest

MYSORE: Employees of Reid and Taylor company, situated at Nanjangud near here, took out a protest march from Town Hall in the city to the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding a hike in wages and bonus. The protest, taken out under the banner of Reid and Taylor Employees Union, was supported by Central Indian Trade Union.

The employees were opposing the management's decision to install new machinery in the factory. A memorandum was presented to the Deputy Commissioner. — Staff Correspondent

Free Ayurveda camp

MYSORE: A free Ayurveda camp has been organised at Prasad Memorial Medical Centre on Irwin Road in the City from 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on June 3.

People suffering from orthopaedic conditions such as arthritis and spondylitis, besides digestive disorders like liver problem, gastritis, ulcer and piles will be treated at the camp. MYSORE: A free cancer detection clinic will be conducted at Preethi Cancer Centre in Lakshmipuram from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. on June 2.

`Opportunistic politics reason for bypoll'

Bhadravati: The former Chief Minister, S. Bangarappa's "opportunistic politics and adamant nature" have necessitated the Lok Sabha byelection from Shimoga, which is costing the Government a lot of money, according to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh.

He was addressing a meeting here on Sunday. He said the Congress-Janata Dal (S) coalition Government had successfully completed one year in office and done good work. The Congress is not afraid of facing elections at any time, he said, adding that the party would win the byelection.

He announced that Rs. 6.5 crores would be released to tackle the acute drinking water scarcity in Bhadravati.

The JD(S) taluk unit president, Nanjunde Gowda, and others were admitted into the Congress on the occasion. — Correspondent

Directive to close schools criticised

BANGALORE: The Karnataka Unaided Schools Managements' Association (KUSMA) has criticised the Education Department's decision to brand some schools as unauthorised and said it is unfair for the department to issue directions to school authorities to close down their institutions.

In a statement to the press, the association president, G.S. Sharma, said the Education Department has called for the closure of over 250 schools that have not obtained permission. Most of those schools have been waiting for permission after sending their proposals to the department a year ago, he said.

Mr. Sharma appealed to the Commissioner of Public Instruction to issue guidelines to the officials of the department to desist from enforcing registration of schools till the Supreme Court pronounces is judgment. — Special Correspondent

Report on citizens' charters submitted

BANGALORE: A delegation of right-to-information activists presented a report, "Karnataka Citizens Charters: A Preliminary Assessment," to the Chief Secretary, K.K. Misra, on Friday. The report contains a desk review that looked into whether citizens' charters conform to universally established principles and a field assessment that assessed whether specific criteria are being implemented by the charters.

The report covers eight departments, including the Bangalore city police, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, the Commercial Taxes Department, the Karnataka State Police, the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, the Stamps and Registration Department and the Transport Department. — Staff Reporter
