BJP, Janata Dal(S) to boycott naval base commissioning

Correspondent

`Local legislators, MP and other dignitaries are not invited to ceremony'

KARWAR: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) have decided to boycott the commissioning ceremony of Karwar Naval Base, INS Kadamba, on Tuesday and stage demonstrations in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office here.

N.G. Kolle, President of the district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, said in a statement issued here that his party is disenchanted with the manner in which the function is being organised.

He said the local MLAs and the MP are not invited to the function.

`Mockery of democracy'

Even George Fernandes, during whose tenure as the Defence Minister the work on Sea Bird project received momentum, is also not invited. Instead the Rae Bareily MP, Sonia Gandhi, has been invited as the chief guest. This is a mockery of democracy, he alleged.

The Bharatiya Janata Party workers from all over the district will gather in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office and stage a demonstration.

`Black Day'

Meanwhile, Kamalakar Gokarn, General Secretary of the Janata Dal (Secular), told presspersons here on Monday that the party workers will observe "Black Day" on Tuesday.

He said the evacuees of the Sea Bird Project are living in a pathetic condition without proper amenities and employment when the base is ready for commissioning.

He said H.D. Deve Gowda, former Prime Minister, should have been invited for the function.

Even The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, and the Minister for Science, Technology and Small Savings are not invited to the function. The party will stage a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office on Tuesday, he added.
