CHIKMAGALUR: H. Viswanath, Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat President, said here on Monday that the Government is considering a proposal to set up committees to monitor the functioning of gram panchayats. Addressing presspersons, Mr. Viswanath stressed the need to appoint responsible officials to gram panchayats in view of the Government's decision to increase the allocation and give more powers to panchayats. Stating that steps are being taken to depute personnel from the Revenue Department to the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, he regretted that the attendance of officials as well as villagers at gram sabhas is disappointing. Explaining the achievements of the panchayat during its five-year term, Mr. Viswanath said the panchayat spent Rs. 846.40 crores of which Rs. 452.46 crores was on salary. Of the 10 projects sanctioned to the district, two had been completed, he said. The Centre has approved a Rs. 10-crore package for sanitation, the President of the zilla panchayat said. Pushpa Lakshminarayana, Vice-Chairperson of the zilla panchayat, and M. Manjunath Naik, Chief Executive Officer, were present.
