Touching up: The Managing Director of Cauvery Niravari Nigam, Thimme Gowda, inspecting the renovation work on temples at Talacauvery in Kodagu on Monday.
MADIKERI: The temples at Talacauvery and Bhagamandala pilgrim centres in Kodagu are being renovated in accordance with traditions and beliefs, the Managing Director of Cauvery Neeravari Nigam, T. Thimme Gowda, said on Monday. Speaking after visiting Sri Agasteshwara and Maha Ganapathi temples at Talacauvery, he said the renovation work taken up under the nigam will be completed in two years. Mr. Gowda said Rs. 6 crores has been set aside by the nigam to renovate the pilgrim centres. There is no dearth of money. The nigam has approved a Rs. 10.50-crore proposal for renovation of these temples, he added. On the delay in the completion of renovation work, which was to be completed by May, Mr. Thimme Gowda said it was because of the non-availability of experts. A sum of Rs. 30 lakhs has been spent on the renovation work. T.D. Manmohan, Technical Adviser to the project, said Sri Agasteshwara and Maha Ganapathi temples were demolished only after considering the opinion of experts (tantris). Re-consecration will be done according to the guidance of experts. He allayed fears that temporary structures such as retaining walls and others around the two demolished temples will not prevent the flow of water into the "kundike'' (small tank) at Talacauvery. Geologists have been consulted before taking up the work. Vishwanath and Manjunath, technical experts, were present. Mr. Thimme Gowda said the nigam has given approval, in principle, to develop gardens at Harangi Reservoir near Kushalnagar. Plans to develop gardens on the lines of Brindavan at the Krishna Raja Sagar Reservoir have to be approved. Brindavan is earning Rs. 45 lakh as revenue a month after its renovation at a cost of Rs. 3.5 crores. On the Chiklihole Reservoir in the district, which is not being put to full use, Mr. Thimme Gowda said according to the State Government, the work on it has been completed. A sum of Rs. 18 crores has been spent on the project. The nigam will provide funds if needed. He said Rs. 4 crores has been approved for 20 various works under the Minor Irrigation Department in Kodagu. The nigam will focus on conservation of water and improving groundwater table across the State. The nigam has launched a "Jala Jagruti Andolan'' for the judicious use of water, he added.
