Three of family killed in accident

ERODE: A family of three persons was killed in a road accident early on Monday morning near Punjai Puliampatty. According to police, Nagarajan (60), a retired bank officer with his wife, Radha (53), son Pradeep (23), a computer engineer, another son Magesh, an engineer working in Canada, daughter-in-law Ujancy and their relative Chandru, a native of Coimbatore, went to Hansure to worship in a temple. While returning, the car fell into a roadside pit and dashed against a tree. While Nagarajan and his wife died on the spot, Pradeep died on the way to hospital. - Staff Reporter

Elected

ERODE: The following persons have been elected office-bearers of the Erode District Pensioners Association: C. Arumugam- president, M. Kumarasamy- vice-president, M. Sadhasivam- secretary, N. N. Subramanian- joint secretary and R. Venkatachalam- treasurer. The annual meeting of the association would be conducted on June 4 at Erode. - Staff Reporter

Heavy rain

ERODE: Gobichettipalayam and its surroundings experienced heavy rain on Sunday night followed by lightning and thunder leading to flooding of Keeripallam Odai, which ran through the heart of the town. Rain water stagnated in Erode Municipal Colony, Municipal Market and Brough Road area affecting the flow of traffic.

Gobichettipalayam recorded 94 mm of rainfall, Sathyamangalam- 43 mm, Bhavanisagar- 33 mm, Erode- 26 mm, Bhavani- 18.6 mm, Perundurai- 17 mm, Kangeyam- 13.4 mm and Moolanure- 5 mm.

Panel member

ERODE: An AIADMK councillor was elected to the Erode Municipal Tax Appeal Committee. The 45-member Erode Municipal Council had elected four Tax Appeal Committee members- Radhamani Bharathy, Jagadambal, K. Subramanian and P. Kuppusamy. Kuppusamy had died some time back and the post was lying vacant.

S. Rajkunmar (AIADMK) polled 31 votes and Pon Sugumar (DMK) 12 votes in the voting conducted on Monday. Heavy police picket was posted in front of the council hall. - Staff Reporter

Median on highways

SALEM: The State Highways Department is constructing a median on Salem Steel Plant Road from the Salem Junction Railway Overbridge near here.

The Government has recently sanctioned Rs. 4.2 lakhs to carry out the project. The Divisional Engineer, V. Pitchaiah, said the median will be filled with fertile sand to plant saplings. - Staff Reporter

Fresh written test for police recruitment

Thanjavur: In accordance with the orders of the Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, Chennai, afresh written examination for General Knowledge paper, in connection with the recruitment of Grade Two Police Constables (Men and women) for the year 2003-2004 will be conducted on June 1 at 8.30 a.m. at Armed Reserve Police (ARP) ground here, according to a press release issued here today by Ramesh Kudawala, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Thanjavur range.

The candidates should be present at 6.00 a.m. on the examination day at the venue.

Call letters have been despatched to all the 3427 eligible candidates of Thanjavur, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts by post on May 16.

It is also informed that those who did not attend the written test held on March 27 will not be allowed to sit for this fresh written examination, the release added. — Staff Reporter

Pharma company remains closed

Thanjavur: Pharm Products Private Ltd, a pharmaceutical company here, remained closed today in response to a bandh call given by the Pharmaceutical Manufacturer's Association -Tamil Nadu Board (IDMA-TNSB) and Confederation of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry (CIPI), according to a release from the company.

The bandh call was given in protest against the arbitrary decision of the Finance Ministry to impose "Excise Duty on MRP", to demand reduction of Excise Duty from 16 per cent to (8 per cent) and to increase the Excise Duty exemption up to Rs 3 crores from Rs. 1 crore for small scale industries. — Staff Reporter

Dalmia Cements

accident: 4 arrested

TIRUCHI: Two days after the accident at the new unit of Dalmia Cements at Dalmiapuram near here where a portion of the "belt conveyor gallery" under construction collapsed claiming the lives of 13 construction labourers, the police on Monday arrested four persons working with a private construction firm.

Storekeeper Sankar, manager Mayilsamy, supervisor Inian, and mason Kannan of the firm were employees of the firm which was carrying out the construction work at the cement factory, police sources said. They were arrested on the charge of negligence resulting in the death of labourers involved in the work. A special team was on the job to apprehend two more persons. — Staff Reporter

Rain in Kanyakumari district

NAGERCOIL: Heavy rain continued to lash parts of Kanyakumari district for the second day on Monday, bringing relief to farmers.

The water level in Pechipparai dam stood at 26.10 feet against its capacity of 48 feet; 36 feet in Perunchani against its capacity of 36 feet; 4.85 feet in Chittar-I against its capacity of 18 feet; 5.18 feet in Chittar-II against its capacity of 18 feet and 2.60 feet in Poigai dam against its capacity of 42.65 feet.

The maximum rainfall of 120 mm was recorded at Chittar-I, followed by 110 mm at Perunchani, 109.6 mm at Puthen dam, 95.5 mm at Surulode, 78 mm at Pechipparai and 69 mm at Chittar II.— Staff Reporter

Kasimedu fishermen come from Bangladesh

CHENNAI: Six fishermen from Kasimedu here, who had been detained in Bangladesh after straying into that country's territorial waters, are being brought to Chennai. They were freed from a prison in Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh following a letter from Chief Minister Jayalalithaa to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, requesting him to expedite their release.

Guns seized, two held

DINDIGUL: The police have arrested N. Sadayappan and P. Azhagu of Korasanampatti on the charge of possessing a single barrel muzzle loaded gun without a valid licence. Police seized two guns from them. Sadayappan and Azhagu were produced before the court which remanded them to judicial custody. — Staff Reporter

20 hurt as buses collide

KANCHEEPURAM: Twenty persons were injured in a road accident on the Chennai-Bangalore Highway involving two Transport Corporation buses on Monday morning.

According to the police, the mishap occurred around 6-30 a.m. at Vellaigate near here when a bus coming from Bangalore to Chennai and another one proceeding towards Arani from Chennai collided. Twenty persons, including the drivers of both buses sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Government hospital here. — Staff Reporter

"Distribute Tamil law textbooks free of cost"

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Advocates Tamil Association has urged the State Government to distribute the newly introduced Tamil law textbooks free of cost to students of law colleges in the State.

The association, in a resolution passed at a recent meeting here, demanded the cancellation of English examinations in law colleges and declaring Tamil as the official language of the High Court. It hailed the release of 27 Tamil law textbooks and Tamil translation of 40 Central and 41 State Acts and appreciated the efforts taken by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and Law Minister D. Jayakumar in obtaining presidential assent for the translations. — Staff Reporter

Demonstration

TIRUNELVELI: Demanding their immediate reinstatement, dismissed road workers staged a demonstration in front of the Tirunelveli Corporation on Monday.

Led by district president, Petchinathan, they urged the Government to withdraw its appeal made in the Supreme Court against the Madras High Court verdict order.

The State general secretary of the Road Workers' Association, Marimuthu, the State secretary of Government Employees' Association, Kumaravel, spoke. — Staff Reporter

Ration rice seized

TIRUNELVELI: Officials from the Department of Civil Supplies have seized 200 bags of ration rice worth about Rs. one lakh at Pudur on Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.

Official sources said the lorry, carrying the ration rice from Puliyangudi to Kerala was intercepted by the Tahsildar, civil supplies, Murugan, and his subordinates at Pudur on Saturday. As the lorry crew escaped, the vehicle was taken to the civil supplies godown at Tenkasi on Monday. — Staff Reporter
