Natwar leaving for Vladivostok today

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh will leave for the eastern city of Vladivostok in Russia on Tuesday for the first formal stand-alone meeting between the Foreign Ministers of India, China and Russia starting on Thursday (June 2).

Considerable significance is being attached to the trilateral meeting which is expected to discuss and give a boost to closer cooperation between the three big Asian neighbours in energy and trade. United Nations reforms, including expansion of the Security Council, are also expected to be on the discussion agenda.

Although the Foreign Ministers have met in the past — the last meeting took place in Almaty — this was always on the sidelines of other international conferences and meetings. This time when Mr. Singh meets his counterparts, Sergei Lavrov of Russia and Li Zhaoxing of China, the focus is expected to be on trilateral cooperation in fields as varied as economic ties, terrorism and even environment protection.

Mr. Singh will travel to Vladivostok via Seoul where a meeting with the South Korean Foreign Minister has been set up, and on his return he will come back via Hong Kong.
