Mental healthcare centre to be set up at Thuckalay

NAGERCOIL: The Government will set up a mental healthcare centre at the Government Hospital at Thuckalay, said the Health Minister, N.Thalavai Sundaram.

Speaking to presspersons recently, the Government had set up mental healthcare centres in Madurai, Ramanathapuram and Tiruchi districts and it had decided to open such centres at Theni and Kanyakumari districts also.

A sum of Rs.25 lakhs had been allotted to set up such a unit at Thuckalay and it would function from June 10 onwards.

The Health Department had launched a novel programme called `health watch' to ensure immediate medical facility to tsunami-hit fishermen in Chennai, Nagapattinam and Kanyakumari districts.

Under this programme, if any tsunami-hit fisherman sends a message through Internet regarding spread of a disease, if any, in a particular area, a team will be deputed quickly to render medical service to fishermen.

The Minister said that the Government Medical College at Asaripallam in this district have been provided with all infrastructure facilities including manpower so that there would not be any difficulty in admitting second batch of students.

Cell computerised

The Government has allotted Rs. one lakh for computerisation of grievance redressal cell in the collectorate, said the Collector, Sunil Paliwal.

Inaugurating the cell here on Monday, he said that the people who wanted to air their grievances could contact three officers who had been posted for this purpose in the cell.

They need not wait for hours to hand over petitions. Potable water will be available in the cell for the benefit of petitioners.

Volunteers will be appointed to lend a helping hand to those who want to write petitions.
