MYSORE: The narrow stretch of road between Mysore and Srirangapatna will soon be widened into a six-lane highway. Addressing presspersons here on Monday, the Minister for Public Works, H.D. Revanna, said the six-lane highway between Mysore and Srirangapatna, the erstwhile capital of Tipu Sultan, will be part of the ongoing road widening works between Mysore and Bangalore. While the 18-km stretch of highway between Mysore and Srirangapatna will be a six-lane road, the remaining portion of the highway between Srirangapatna and Bangalore will be a four-lane one with a median. Though the road widening works are scheduled to be completed by June, Mr. Revanna said it is likely to be delayed on account of land acquisition problems between Maddur and Mysore. "It may take a few more months for the widened road to be thrown open to traffic", he said. Mr. Revanna said he will inspect the on-going road works in a day or two. Though he expects the stretch of road between Maddur and Bangalore to be completed earlier, the portion between Maddur and Mysore will take a slightly longer period. The Public Works Minister said the Government has decided to take up the Mysore-Bantwal Cross highway in three phases. The first phase, envisaging a 86.6-km road between Mysore and Kushalnagar, will be executed at a cost of Rs. 103 crores. Tenders have been invited and the work has been entrusted to an agency, which will begin work in about a week's time. The agency has been given a deadline of 24 months to execute the project, he said. A four-lane highway will also come up between Mysore and Bilikere, which are separated by 18.5 km. The Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) has carried out an estimation of the project. Mr. Revanna said the Public Works Department had drawn up a workload of Rs. 223 crores for Mysore circle, encompassing Mysore, Chamarajanagar and Mandya districts, for the year 2005-06. The proposed works include construction of buildings and roads in the circle. Later, Mr Revanna held a review meeting of officials belonging to Power and Public Works Departments in Mysore division.
