UGC recognition for Chavara college

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has given recognition to Chavara Government College.

The college, which started functioning in 1981, is the only Government college in the district.

The UGC recognition entitles the college to all benefits for schemes and projects under Section 12(B) of the UGC Act, the college principal, M. Abdul Lathif, said at a press conference here on Monday.

He said that with recommendation from the Kerala University, the college has already submitted applications to the UGC for projects costing Rs.1.35 crores. These projects include construction of buildings, development of the library and computerisation.

Work for gaining the recognition of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council has also begun. The college offers four degree courses and one post graduate course. The vice-president of the Parent Teachers Association of the college, Chavara Surendran Pillai, and treasurer, S. Rajan Pillai, were also present at the press conference.
