THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Capital City Development Forum alleged here on Monday that the Government had made a mockery of the Cabinet sub-committee and the empowered committee of officials constituted for the development of the capital region. Addressing a press conference, the chairman of the Forum, M. Vijayakumar, and the Mayor, J. Chandra, accused the UDF Government of adopting a negligent attitude to the development of the city. They said many development projects earmarked for the city were either held up or shifted to other places. The Forum said the Government had shifted the proposed aircraft maintenance unit and the IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) to Kochi under pressure from powerful lobbies. "The proposals to set up a High Court Bench, a Biotechnology Park and an IT Corridor on the Kovalam-Kazhakuttam stretch of the National Highway bypass are bogged down while the development of the international airport and the Vizhinjam container terminal has failed to take off," they said.
High Court Bench
Mr. Vijayakumar said the State Government was fully responsible for the failure to set up a High Court Bench in the capital. "The Assembly had unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to sanction a Bench for the state capital. It is now up to the Chief Minister to take the initiative in this matter," he said. The Mayor said the decision to de-link three panchayats from the City Corporation exposed the Government's resolve to downgrade the city. She alleged that the move was part of a strategy to shift the State capital from Thiruvananthapuram. The Forum will launch an agitation to mobilise public opinion against the State Government and highlight the neglect shown to the city. In the first phase of the stir, the Forum will stage a dharna in front of the Secretariat on June 1 evening. Elected representatives, residents associations and various organisations committed to the development of the capital city are expected to participate in the dharna.
