KC(S) calls for unity of farmers' organisations

Staff Reporter

Governments blamed for crisis in agriculture sector

KOTTAYAM: The first State conference of the Kerala Congress(Secular) came to an end here on Monday with the party leader P.C. George making a call for concerted action by all organisations representing farmers' interests to join hands.

Inaugurating the delegates' meet, Mr. George said his party would take the lead in forging unity among the various organisations functioning in the area and would work towards forming a federation of such organisations.

The core reason for the acute backwardness of the State on the agriculture front was the negligence on the part of the succeeding Governments which came to power at the Centre, Mr. George said. Social security, one area in which the State had taken a lead, has been affected

severely on account of the backwardness in the farm sector, he said.

Economic document

The Economic Policy Document approved by the delegates' session said that the UDF Government was following an economic policy which made the rich richer and the poor poorer.

The development programmes should aim to assure food, shelter and employment to the lowest strata of society, it said and stressed the need to speed up growth ensuring equality and social justice.

The need of the hour was to prepare a blueprint for an economic policy which would ensure ecological conservation, the document said.

It also called for bringing back constructive politics to the campuses, otherwise, the nation might miss the chance to carry on with the cultural heritage which was rooted in humanism and social awareness.

The document also wanted the focus on small and micro-hydel projects.

The political resolution passed by the meet alleged that the UDF Government during the past four years had alienated itself from the people and was facing disintegration.

The resolution also presents a gloomy picture of the four-year rule and focuses on corruption, mismanagement and the failure to put pressure on the Union Government to announce a special package for the crisis-ridden agriculture sector.

The delegates' session also approved a 57-point document to be submitted to the Prime Minister and the UPA chairperson.
