Work as per National Highway standards; vehicle bays planned

At a fast pace: The development work on the Chalakkayam-Pampa road in progress at Chalakkayam near Pampa.

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Chalakkayam-Pampa road development project is expected to be completed in three months, the Travancore Devaswom Board Chief Engineer, K. Ravikumar, has said.

Talking to The Hindu , the TDB Chief Engineer said that the work on the 3.9-km stretch of the Chalakkayam-Pampa road was being carried out as per the National Highway standards.

The road development project, when completed, would facilitate two-lane traffic, with vehicle bays along a few points, he said. Mr. Ravikumar said that the project was estimated to cost Rs. 288 lakhs.

He said that the TDB works department had also proposed widening of the culverts along the road so as to avert bottlenecks.

Base camp

According to Mr. Ravikumar, the TDB was for setting up a full-fledged base camp for Sabarimala pilgrims at Nilackal, taking into consideration the increase in pilgrim inflow and their basic needs in the next 50 years.

He said that a Delhi-based firm, Ecosmart India Limited, would prepare the masterplan for the proposed base camp.

However, the TDB would make temporary arrangements to provide every possible facility for pilgrims at Nilackal during the coming Mandalam-Makaravilakku season, he added.

Action plan

Mr. Ravikumar said that the TDB would launch pollution abatement schemes in Sabarimala as part of the proposed Pampa Action Plan as soon as it received the mandatory clearance for carrying out the work in the forest areas coming under the Periyar Tiger Reserve.
