THRISSUR: The Kerala Students Union (KSU) State president, P.C. Vishnunath, has threatened to launch a blockade agitation against the Leader of the Opposition, V.S. Achuthanandan, if he tries to prevent the proposed Smart City project.
Job potential
Addressing a press conference here on Monday, Mr. Vishnunath asserted that the Smart City project was capable of generating at least 30,000 job opportunities in the State every year, and any attempt to stall it would be detrimental to the interests of the unemployed youth in the State. According to the KSU president, there appears to be an ``inter-State conspiracy' behind the attempts to stall the project. He alleged that leaders like Mr Achuthanandan are apparently being used by those `conspirators.' When there were reports of Nokia starting a production unit in the State, there was intense lobbying against it and Nokia's unit has been set up in Chennai, he said. The KSU president demanded that only the Government fee be levied from students who had secured admission in government-controlled self-financing colleges in the merit quota in the State. Orders in this direction should be issued before the counselling for professional courses begins this year.
Self-financing colleges
The KSU also demanded that the Centre immediately promulgate an Ordinance for controlling self-financing colleges in States. Members of Parliament from the State, cutting across their political affiliations, should put pressure on the Centre for the legislation. The KSU will launch intense agitations to press for the Ordinance.
