THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Cadet Corps (NCC) has chalked out an ambitious plan to strengthen and extend its activities in the State. A document, `Vision 2010', highlighting the proposals to be implemented over the next five years was released here on Monday by Brig. O.A. James, Deputy Director-General, NCC, Kerala and Lakshadweep, by handing over a copy to Col. V.R.R. Pillai, Commander, Thiruvananthapuram Group of NCC. The document has been prepared with a view to making NCC cadets more committed and better citizens who could be sinews of the country, contributing effectively to nation building , Brig. James said.
Moral values
Adequate emphasis has been given in the document to moral values, advancement in the field of information technology, the ongoing process of globalisation and the expansion of the private sector, he added. The cadets are to be equipped to face the challenges in all these areas and also to carve an appropriate place for them in the fast-changing society, he added.
Overall change
The document aims to bring about an overall change in the working of the organisation. One of the thrust areas is providing vocational dimension to NCC training so as to enable cadets to secure employment in other sectors besides the defence forces. Vocational training is sought to be provided as an add-on course, forming part of the NCC training, in educational institutions. Also, issues such as personality development and improvement of communication skills of the cadets will be taken care of. The document addresses various issues like extending NCC coverage to even self-financing and private institutions and increasing the overall enrolment in the organisation. Even as the concept of mixed battalion is to be standardised, emphasis is also given to enrol more girls into the NCC. The ultimate aim is to bring the strength of girl cadets to 33 per cent. At present, the strength of NCC in Kerala is 74,000, including 14,000 girls, Brig. James said.
`NCC Nagars'
Another major proposal is to set up `NCC Nagars' at the group headquarters level in the State. All the major activities of the organisation at the group level will be concentrated at one place. Facilities like obstacle course and firing range will be provided for the benefit of cadets. There will be a networking between the directorate and the different group headquarters to improve efficiency of the organisation. Talks are already on with the State Government for allotment of land for this project. Adventure and sports activities are to be strengthened, with the launching of more sailing expeditions at sea and in the backwaters of the State and for parasailing, gliding and hot air ballooning, he said.
