Unprecedented security arrangements for June 2 byelection, says the SP

  • Voters as polling agents elsewhere
  • 5,700 policemen to be deployed
  • Videographers in 185 polling stations

ANANTAPUR: Arrangements have been made for the June 2 Penukonda byelection. Selection and training of polling personnel and electronic voting machines (EVMs) have also been kept ready.

Addressing a press conference, the District Collector and District Election Officer, Y.V. Anuradha, told mediapersons here on Monday that several confidence building measures had also been taken up asking people to utilise their right of franchise without fear or favour.

As polling agents' job was to identify the voters, the EC had issued instructions to preferably allow the villagers as agents. Under special circumstances voters of the constituency would be allowed as polling agents elsewhere.

However, no outsider would be allowed in the constituency on the day of polling.

Publicity material, including posters, audio cassettes and radio programmes had also been prepared for creating awareness among voters to utilise their vote. To overcome the communication problem all the zonal officers would use VHF wireless sets provided by the police.

To record the incidents in polling stations videographers would be provided at all the 185 polling stations. Besides, 27 mobile videographers would also be kept ready on all the 27 routes. The videographers were also given their job charts.

As the administration had identified that a few candidates in the fray were affiliated to two major parties it had been decided not to extend the facilities of candidates to them, Ms. Anuradha stated.

Unprecedented security had been provided for the election. In all, 5,700 policemen would be deployed. R.S. Praveen Kumar, SP, said that they had categorised 68 villages as hypersensitive, Three control rooms would function at Penukonda, Chennekothapalli and Anantapur.
