Four killed in explosion at seafood unit

Staff Reporter

NELLORE: Four workers were killed and three others injured seriously in an explosion in a godown of Sharat Industries, a seafood unit, at Venkannapalem in T.P. Gudur mandal, 21 km from here, late on Sunday night.

The dead have been identified as Sk. Khaleel, Sk. Mira Mohiuddin of Nellore district, Srinivasulu and Ch. Venkateswarlu of Kakinada. The injured persons -- T. Satish, A. Sukkaiah and D. Vishnu -- have been rushed to a private hospital here.

The impact was so severe that the godown was littered with bleaching deposits and hot bubbles were coming out from the debris till Monday afternoon. The DSP (Rural), K. Veera Reddy, said an explosives expert would investigate the blast. B. Sivadhar Reddy, SP, who visited the area, said that an expert from the Forensic Scientific Laboratory, Guntur, had been asked to look into the matter.

The unit mechanical incharge, Balakrishna Reddy, and the farm manager, Srinivas, told presspersons that the injured persons were rushed to hospitals immediately after the blast. The police were informed and fire services alerted, they claimed.
