Guntur leads in LI projects

Projects costing Rs. 400 cr. taken up in 22 districts

GUNTUR: Guntur district tops in implementing lift irrigation schemes in the State with works valued at Rs.80 crores sanctioned and another Rs.50 crores of projects in the pipeline, the Andhra Pradesh Irrigation Development Corporation Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, A.K. Jain, has said.

The corporation had taken up projects in 22 districts valued at Rs.400 crores in the State and the budgetary allocation was Rs.238 crores for the current financial year. Mr. Jain told The Hindu after a review meeting of the department here, that about 1.60 lakh acres new ayacut would be covered under the 106 schemes, which had sanction.

While the NABARD was financing Rs.150 crores, Rs.80 crores would come from the State plan funds. About Rs.8 crores would be spent as share capital in these projects, he observed. On completion of the projects in Guntur district about 40,000 acres of new ayacut would be developed.

Revival of projects

Other districts where major works had been taken up were: Prakasam, West Godavari, Krishna, Nizamabad, Adilabad and Kurnool. Revival of 573 projects was taken up in these districts and would be completed by March 2006, he observed. Rayapudi Lift Irrigation Scheme in Guntur district was a model one, he said where the farmers had contributed Rs.80 lakhs in the form of land and had on their own purchased a generator valued at Rs.18 lakhs.

He requested the District Collector, G. Jayalakshmi, to coordinate between the A.P. Transco and the APSIDC to immediately lay special power lines to the lift irrigation projects.
