Staff Correspondent
MANGALORE: The Mangalore City Corporation is ready to take up monsoon-related work, particularly those to prevent overflowing of drains, the Commissioner of the corporation, V.S. Nayak, has said.
Machines
When asked by councillors if storm water drains had been desilted, Mr. Nayak said they are being dredged partly with the help of machines. But all works should be over by June 5, he added. A special group has been set up which will attend to complaints round the clock. The Executive Engineer of the corporation, Suresh Babu, said Mangalore city has over 550-km of drains. The drains pass through difficult terrain where machinery cannot reach, he said and added that in some drains, even manual dredging is difficult. But the corporation has skilled workers to take up such jobs, he said.
Trenching
The Commissioner said that since trenching work has been taken up at many places in the city, the situation might compound with the onset of the monsoon. He said the diggers have been instructed to pack the trenches tightly with soil and not leave any loose soil on the roads.
Trees being inspected
The corporation has also taken up pre-monsoon inspection of trees. Electric poles are being checked in association with Mangalore Electricity Supply Company and Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd.
