CHENNAI: The Salesian Sisters gave away 40 boats to 130 fishermen families of North Chennai which were affected by the December 26, 2004 tsunami. Residents of Lakshmipuram, Ondikuppam and Periya Kasi Koil received the Salesian Sister's Solidarity Certificate from Sister Bernardine Lazar, Provincial of Salesian Sisters, Chennai Province. Sister Maria Selvam, project coordinator, said that in another three months, 145 boats would be given to 435 families in 12 kuppams of Tiruvottiyur. The funds have been pooled in from the Salesian family of Germany and Italy.
Counselling
The victims have been given guidance and counselling on self-help in rehabilitation. They are also given clothes, books, uniforms and rice. Sister Siriapushpam Mathew, Vice-Provincial of Salesian Sisters; Sister Amali Devaraj, Principal of St. Francis Xavier's Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School; representatives of the three villages, Fathima Vasanth, Principal, Madras School of Social Work, and Sister Michael Cruz, Directress of Fathima Convent, Kodambakkam, were present.
