Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Monday stood at 112.6 feet. The level in the Vaigai dam was 29.04 feet.

Thaniyamangalam received the highest rainfall of 105 mm followed by Pulipatti - 70, Mettupatti - 61.2, Melur - 58, Kallandiri - 46, Madurai - 45, Virahanoor dam - 43.7, Uthamapalayam - 41, Sattaiyar dam - 40, Vaigai dam - 38, Veerapandi - 34, Kuppanampatti - 21, Shanmuganadi - 20, Idayapatti - 18.6, Tekkadi - 12, Periyar dam - 11, Andipatti - 9, Manjalar dam - 5, Peranai - 3.4 and Gudalur - 3 mm.

Re-examination

The Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Madurai Range), B.K. Ravi, has announced that the examination of general knowledge subject for the recruitment of Grade II police constables (2003-04) would be conducted again.

The re-examination would be held at 8.30 a.m. on June 1 in the Armed Reserve Grounds. The candidates who wrote the earlier examination on March 27, 2005, had been advised to appear again. The hall tickets had already been despatched, the DIG said in a statement issued here on Monday.

Licence for retail cracker shops

Those who intend to get fresh police licence for retail cracker shops in the city should apply in the prescribed form by July 31.

According to the Commissioner of Police, Vijay Kumar, the applicants should appear in person in the licence section and remit the prescribed fees. Late applications would be rejected.

Dharna staged

Members of the Tamil Nadu Sanitary Workers Development Union staged a dharna at Tallakulam here on Monday, demanding abrogation of contract system for executing work in Madurai Corporation areas as this infringed on their rights.

Led by the State vice-president, R. Palanisamy, the members urged the corporation authorities to give due respect to sanitary workers. The administration should cancel the contract awarded to agencies or non-governmental organisations in clearing garbage. — Staff Reporter
