HYDERABAD: Keeping in view the fact that the nursing community is the most vulnerable group dealing with hazardous and harmful biomedical waste in hospitals, the National Green Corps (NGC) has launched a sensitisation and orientation programme for nurses in the State. The first session of the programme was held at the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital here on Monday, during which the Indian Red Cross Andhra Pradesh chapter secretary, K. Rajyalakshmi, interacted with the nursing staff of the hospital on safety aspects while dealing with patients and harmful material in laboratories. The NGC director, W.G. Prasanna Kumar, said all the nine nursing schools and 294 private nursing schools in the State would be covered under the programme in a phased manner in the academic year 2005-06. The programme would run concurrently with the World Environmental Week celebrations of the NGC. Practical programmes would be organised in all these institutions to orient the nurses on aspects of biomedical waste management like segregation of waste at the source, collecting them into distinct coloured bags as per rules, occupational health issues, hospital hygiene and public health and so on. A comprehensive action plan for similar programmes is also being drawn out by NGC in consultation with the Directorate of Medical Education, Mr. Prasanna Kumar added.
