THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Fisheries has warned of stern action, including cancellation of registration, against fishermen using crude explosives called "thotta" for fishing. A meeting of all heads of departments held at Vizhinjam on Monday decided to arrest those using the crude explosives for fishing and keeping gun powder with them. A team of specially trained personnel of the Coast Guard, Marine Enforcement Police, Department of Fisheries and the local police would commence joint round-the-clock patrolling in the sea off Kovalam as part of a crackdown on the rampant use of crude explosives. The team had been given powers to conduct raids and to set up squads to unearth the crude explosives and gunpowder in the locality. A release quoting the Joint Director, South Zone, Department of Fisheries, said it has been scientifically proved that the use of crude explosives result in the depletion of fish population. There are also reports that the rampant use of the crude explosives had led to cracks in buildings in and around the Light House at Kovalam. Tourists had complained that they were not able to swim in the sea owing to the use of explosives for fishing. Many tourists who had come to the beach resort had complained to the authorities of hearing problems caused by the deafening sound caused by the explosive charges. The meeting decided to cancel the registration of the fishermen found using the crude explosive for fishing. The fishermen would not get any benefits due to him from the Government, the release said.
