HYDERABAD: The present generation of students are in the `golden period' when the nation's economy is poised to take off in a big way, thanks to India emerging as a leader in the IT field, the Director, IBM India, Ganesh Margabandhu said. He was the chief guest at the inaugural of second batch of MCA class of 2007 at ICFAI School of Information Technology (ISIT), here on Monday.

Listing out the favourable factors, he said the present generation has a great opportunity called India which was growing not only in IT but in bio-engineering, bio-medicine, etc., and universities like ICFAI were specially designing innovative courses to suit the requirements of industry including IT.

    Word of advice

He advised the students of tightly packed two-year MCA course as against the three-year conventional MCA course to develop strong functional skills and an ability to apply, adapt and integrate information technology in any business environment.

The fast developing technology of Internet has redefined the concept of working and computing was undergoing phenomenal changes, he said. The IT services were available for customers to utilise and pay with offshore development ensuring 24x7 service to the client.

Making a special mention of mobile computing, he said computers and communication fields were merging, changing the very work culture. The ICFAI Vice-Chancellor, J. Mahendar Reddy, said these were the days of knowledge-based economy. He said ICFAI University's teaching methodology was a mix of classroom teaching, workshops, internship and projects to give students good exposure.

After China and the US, India has large number of educated youth but only 7 per cent of them were able to avail higher education because of paucity of funds. The ISIT Dean, J.P. Ramappa, said IT industry was growing at a rapid phase and qualified professionals were in good demand. Quoting Nasscom statistics, he said the IT sector was growing at 20 per cent a year accounting for four per cent of the GDP and it was expected to touch 10 per cent in four years.

Lot of thought had gone into designing the curriculum and the programme has six terms spread over two years. Apart from Hyderabad, it was offered in six other cities. ISIT signed up with Microsoft and Oracle Corporation for their certification programmes, he said.
