Round table to debate on media's `Lakshman Rekha'

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Press Academy of Andhra Pradesh in collaboration with Centre for Media Studies (CMS) will organise a national round table on "Should There Be A Lakshman Rekha for News Media" at Jubilee Hall on June 1.

The conference will be inaugurated by S.Japial Reddy, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting. Justice G.N.Ray, chairman of the Press Council of India, will be the chief guest.

Addressing a press conference here on Monday, D.Amar, chairman of the Academy and N.Bhaskar Rao, founder chairman of the CMS, said the round table would debate whether competition among media was leading to publication and broadcasting of news, often viewed as untruthful.

They said various sections were pointing out that media was fast losing credibility.

The seminar, divided into four sessions, would discuss the role of media. Senior journalists M.J.Akbar and Kuldip Nayar and Rajdeep Sardesai would deliver keynote addresses. Eenadu editor, Ch. Ramoji Rao, senior journalist C. Raghava Chari, Andhra Jyothi editor, K.Ramachandra Murthy, social activist Swami Agnivesh, the CPI leader, D.Raja and Magsaysay awardee, Shanta Sinha will be among the participants.
