`Transfer power to Panchayat Raj bodies'

Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Raj Chamber has urged the Union Minister for Rural Development, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, to instruct the State to transfer powers/functions to Panchayat Raj institutions.

In a representation submitted to Mr. Singh here on Monday, Y. Baburajendra Prasad, president of the chamber, pressed for devolution of powers to the Panchayat Raj institutions, as envisaged in the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments.

Grants-in-aid

The representation suggested that the grants-in-aid intended and released by the Centre be released and adjusted directly to the Panchayat Raj institutions concerned without interference from the State Governments.

The chamber leaders told the Minister that the State transferred 19 subjects to Panchayat Raj institutions "only for the sake of devolution without any meaningful purpose".

They sought intervention of the Centre to ensure that the funds/functions relating to 29 subjects were transferred to the Panchayat Raj institutions.
