Resolving Kashmir

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's proposal to demilitarise part of Kashmir, and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh welcoming it (May 30), is one more proof that the two countries are serious about the peace process and are making all-out efforts to resolve the Kashmir issue. At the same time, India should ensure that the move is not a strategic compromise and does not give any undue advantage to militant outfits.

The Prime Minister's offer to work with Gen. Musharraf to find a meaningful solution to difficult problems (May 31) is welcome. He has shunned the jingoism and rhetoric that characterised India-Pakistan ties in the past. That Dr. Singh has firmly rejected any negotiation on redrawing the boundaries even while signalling his readiness to move forward shows he is a leader par excellence.

A.J. Rangarajan,

A debate is on in certain sections over granting Kashmir greater autonomy. This is in fact part of a proposal to solve the Kashmir issue. But why only Kashmir? A vast country with over a billion people can afford to have autonomous States with a strong binding of common history and heritage.

Salem, T.N.
