Ayurveda tablet to help stop smoking

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Year-long research conducted by a medical team of the Alcohol & Drug Information Centre (ADIC) - India in the State has revealed that an Ayurveda tablet, `Anticig,' made from seven herbs is a "safe and effective drug" in the treatment of tobacco dependence, it is claimed.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the principal investigator, Jeesh C. Haran, and the director of ADIC-India, Johnson J. Edayaranmula, said the findings were based on a study conducted by administering the drug to 35 persons as per World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines. Thirty-three persons completed the treatment programme that lasted for eight weeks.

Two persons discontinued the treatment as one developed severe headache and another had to undergo a surgery.

As much as 62 per cent (22 persons) completely abstained from smoking — six of them completely abstained from smoking after four weeks.

Dr. Haran said a follow-up of the 35 persons at the end of 10 months revealed that 37 per cent (13 persons) sustained complete abstinence from smoking. "The drug has been found to be very effective and is devoid of any side-effects," he said.

ADIC-India has brought the findings to the notice of WHO and further tests in this regard had begun at the de-addiction centre of NIMHANS in Bangalore.

"Anticig" is a combination of the herbs Syzgium aromaticum, Zingerber officianale, Elattaria cardamomum, Cinnamoum zeylanicum, Ocimum sanctum, Myristiac fragrans and Acorus calamus.
