KOCHI: Acclaimed Sanskrit scholar K. Kunjunny Raja, who died on Monday, was cremated at Aluva crematorium on Tuesday morning. He leaves behind his wife, Paliath Santha Kunjamma, two sons, Girish Paliath and Sreekumar Paliath, and two daughters, P. Radhika and P.Lalitha. He was 85 years. Prof. Raja, who commanded the respect of intellectuals and scholars across the country and abroad, was a top researcher and critic, whose papers are considered most authentic by new age researchers. Prof. Raja, who retired as the Professor and Head of Sanskrit Department from the Madras University in 1980, had contributed more than 200 research papers and authored 20 books in English, six books in Sanskrit and four books in Malayalam. He had edited several books in Sanskrit and Malayalam. Born at Kumarapuram Palace in 1920 to Neelakantan Namboothiri and Kavu Thampurati, he was known as Midukkan thampuran because of his extraordinary brilliance. Having followed a traditional system of education in Sanskrit, he went on to take B.A (Hons) in Mathematics and M.A. in Sanskrit from Madras University, taking the first rank in both. Prof. Raja took two doctoral degrees, one from Madras University, where he presented his paper on `Contribution of Kerala to Sanskrit Literature,' and the other from London under teachers like J.R. Firth, W.S. Allen and R.H. Robins in `Arthathinte Bharatheeya Sidhanthangal' (Indian theories on semantics). Recipient of several awards, Prof. Raja was given the Vidyabhushanam title by Kerala Sanskrit Academy and the President's award for best Sanskrit scholar.
