BELGAUM: Both the ruling Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular), and the principal Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party received a jolt from the Maharashtra Ekikaran Samithi (MES) in the elections for Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee (APMC) in Belgaum taluk held on Monday. Of the 11 seats, candidates affiliated to MES won 8, leaving only two for Congress and one for BJP. Although the parties are not directly involved in the APMC elections, it is a fact that major parties field their party workers. The candidates elected from Hudli and Sambra are affiliated to the Congress, while the candidate elected from Hirebagewadi is a member of the BJP. Shanta Hande, a supporter of MES, was elected unopposed from Peeranwadi. The counting of votes was taken up on Tuesday morning. By evening, the results only in respect of Belgaum APMC were available at the district headquarters here. The results of other nine APMCs in the district are awaited. The results may not have any immediate impact on the MES campaign for transfer of Belgaum to Maharashtra. But, it comes as a morale booster at a time when the Maharashtra has filed a suit before the Supreme Court demanding transfer of Belgaum and other parts in the border areas to its side.
