"A huge bubble was created with media's help"

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: While discharging the three Hinduja brothers and the erstwhile Swedish company A.B. Bofors in the Bofors gun deal case on Tuesday, Justice R.S. Sodhi of the Delhi High Court pulled up the Central Bureau of Investigation for wasting nearly Rs. 250 crores of public money on the investigation for 14 years.

Mr. Justice Sodhi also criticised the media for aiding the investigating agency in creating what he called "a huge bubble" during the investigations. "Before parting, I must express my disapproval at the investigations that went on for 14 years and I was given to understand that it cost the exchequer nearly [Rs.] 250 crores," he observed.

Regarding the role of the media, Mr. Justice Sodhi said: "During the investigation a huge bubble was created with the aid of the media which, however, when tested by the court, burst leaving behind a disastrous trail of suffering."

On the ruination of the careers of the accused persons, he observed: "Careers — both political and professional — were ruined, besides causing huge economic loss. Many an accused lived and died with a stigma."

He hoped that the elite investigating agency (CBI) "will be more responsible in future."
