Two commit suicide

Nagercoil : Mani (35) and Nelson (32), brothers belonging to Seenichavilai under Nithravilai police station limits, committed suicide, consuming liquor-mixed poison on Monday.

According to the police, as their wives left them a few years back, owing to a quarrel, they took the extreme step.

Grocery shop burgled

Tuticorin: Burglars broke open a grocery shop at SPIC Nagar here on Monday and decamped with valuables.

The police said according to a complaint lodged by Velmurugandi, a television set, charger lamp and cash were missing from his shop. The Muthiapuram police are investigating the matter.

Man found murdered

Tuticorin: A man was found murdered at Sawyerpuram near here on Tuesday.

The police said the body of Gunasekaran (45), who was working as a peon in a lawyer's office here, had injuries.

The Sawyerpuram police have taken Ponsingh, Selvarasi and Santha into custody for interrogation.

26 held for gambling

Tuticorin: A total of 26 persons were arrested during raids on Monday evening for gambling at public places in the district.

The police said while 13 persons were taken into custody from Alwarthirunageri area, six were arrested from Meignanapuram, four from Thalamuthu Nagar and three from Puthiamputhur police station limits.

The accused were remanded in custody.

Auto driver fatally hit

Nagercoil: Krishnan (55), an auto driver of Leepuram near Kanyakumari, was fatally hit by a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus, when he was walking along the road near Erulappapuram on Monday.

Krishnan died at the Government Headquarter Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Unidentified body found in tank

Nagapattinam: An unidentified body of a 45-year-old man was found in the `Thamaraikulam' tank here on Tuesday. Police have registered a case. — Staff Reporter

Nominated to Senate

Thanjavur: K. Sekar, Professor of Tamil, Urumu Dhanalakshmi College, has been nominated to the senate of the Tamil University, Thanjavur, under section 18-class (II) (3) of Tamil University Act, by the Governor, Surjeet Singh Barnala, who is the Chancellor of Tamil University, according to a press release issued here today.

The senate membership is for a period of three years. — Staff Reporter

Seven huts gutted

Tiruchi: Seven temporary huts were destroyed in a fire accident at Mannarpuram here on Monday.

Fire and Rescue Services Department personnel here said the fire broke out in one of the huts while food was being prepared and spread to nearby huts soon. — Staff Reporter

Tiruchi: The water level in the Mettur dam stood at 52.23 feet today.

The inflow was 2000 cusecs and the discharge 900 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Fast

ERODE: Members of the All India Loco Running Staff Association and Organisation of Loco Pilots and Assistant Pilots, Train Drivers of Indian Railways observed a 24-hour fast from Monday evening before the Erode Railway Station. They demanded that the Railway Ministry should reduce the duty hours of the loco running staff from 14 hours to 8 hours daily, release the Running Allowance Committee's report and fill up vacancies in the Railways immediately. Members from Thiruvananthapuram, Palakkad, Madurai, Tiruchi and Chennai participated. Former MLA, N. Periyasamy of CPI, inaugurated the fast. On Tuesday, the Central president of the All India Loco Running Staff Association, L. Mony and the MLA, K.C. Karunakaran spoke.

Crop damage

ERODE: Hundreds of banana trees were uprooted and the paddy crop ready for harvest affected due to heavy gale and rain in Pandiyampalayam and Vellankoil in Kavindapady area on Monday. As Kavindapady, a dry tract, depends on the Bhavani and LBP water, farmers raised paddy, banana and sugarcane. They urged the district administration to grant them compensation.

Five killed in road accident

KANCHEEPURAM : Five persons were killed and 16 others injured in a road accident on the GST Road near Madurantakam on Tuesday morning.

The police said the accident occurred around 4. 30 a.m. when a contract carriage, carrying 40 persons, collided with a granite-stone-laden lorry, which broke down on the middle of the carriageway near Pottalkadu.

Nagaraj (45), bus driver, and four others died on the spot.

Traffic was disrupted for more than three hours. — Staff Reporter

Seven year-term for murder bid

TIRUNELVELI : A Fast Track Court here has sentenced five persons, including a man and his two sons, to seven-year imprisonment for attempting to murder a youth.

According to the prosecution, S. Muthupandi (50), his sons, M. Murugan (29), M. Mani (27), relatives, K. Ramasangu (38) and V. Vellaipandi (26), all hailing from Kumbalampaadu, attacked S. Rajagopal (31) on December 6, 1999, owing to enmity.

The victim lost his foot.

Judge Meganathan also imposed a fine of Rs. 5, 000 on each. — Staff Reporter

Collector to visit U.S.

NAGAPATTINAM : The U.S. Department of Education has invited Nagapattinam Collector J. Radhakrishnan to the United States a three-week visit to various parts of the country, including Washington, Seattle, Florida, San Francisco, Hawaii, for taking part in meetings and discussions on tsunami-related issues. Official sources said on Tuesday the Collector was awaiting clearance from the Centre and the Tamil Nadu Government.

He is likely to leave in a few days. — Staff Reporter

New Registrar-General

CHENNAI : Former Principal District Judge of Madurai A.C. Arumuga Perumal Adityan has been appointed the Registrar-General of the Madras High Court. He will assume office on June 1, according to a Registry notification. Incumbent J.A.K. Sampath Kumar attained superannuation on May 31. — Staff Reporter

Prayer for rain

THANJAVUR: In connection with Buddha Poornima on May 23, the South Zone Cultural Centre here organised "Varunaragam" cultural programmes, praying for rain from May 24 to May 26. Maithili Kannan of Thanjavur sang rain-related songs from Devaram and Thirukural and of Bharathiyar and Bharathidasan on the first day. She rendered "Amirthavarshini" ragam.

Vilathikulam M.S. Rajalakshmi performed Villupattu on the second day. She rendered the "Viradaparuvam" of Mahabharatham.

Thanjai N. Ramesh Raja sang folksongs on the third day, says a release. — Staff Reporter
