CHENNAI: With two associations claiming the support of medical and paramedical colleges for conducting the common entrance examination this year, the statutory committee headed by Justice S.S. Subramani has directed both to furnish fresh consent letters from supporting institutions by June 6.
List of member-colleges
While Isari Ganesh, secretary of the Private Health Sciences Professional Colleges Affiliated to the Dr. MGR Medical University, submitted a list of 121 member-colleges, T.D. Naidu, president of the All-India Medical and Engineering Colleges Association, submitted consent letters from 76 colleges. However, Mr. Justice Subramani directed them to furnish consent letters, with the latest date, within a week. Talking to reporters later, the Judge said that if no further adjournments of proceedings were sought the statutory committee would pass orders in a week thereafter. Mr. Ganesh said the only self-financing medical college in the State besides five out of six dental colleges and seven out of eight homoeopathy colleges were part of the institutions that had extended support to his organisation.
Infrastructure in place
Pointing out that their association had conducted the entrance examinations last year "to the utmost satisfaction of the permanent committee," he said a total of 121 health science colleges out of 144 in the State were supporting the association. Mr. Ganesh said the entire infrastructure was in place to conduct the common entrance examination even with short notice. "Even the question papers are ready," he added.
Admission to management quota seats
Mr. Naidu, reiterating his demand that the Committee await the orders of the Supreme Court on admission to management quota seats in professional colleges, said that if invited the AIMECA would conduct its entrance examination online. He said, "since the last date for completion of all admissions is September 30, there is enough time left for the Committee to take a decision after the verdict of the seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court which is seized of the matter." The Christian Medical College too has submitted a memorandum to the Committee, seeking exemption from the central entrance test regime. Just as in the case of last year, it sought permission to hold its own entrance test and admit students. The State Government has sought time till June 6 to file its reply.
