`Defer introduction of internal marks'

BANGALORE: The leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, B.S. Yediyurappa, on Monday urged the State Government to defer its decision to introduce 20 per cent internal marks for science courses and 10 per cent for arts and commerce courses at the pre-university level. In a statement, he said students and parents are concerned about this new development and the Government should have consulted them before taking a decision. — Staff Reporter

Training for Konkani TV serial actors

Mangalore: A three-day training camp for actors of the first Konkani television serial was held at the Samanvaya Conference Hall here between May 27 and May 29. Forty-five Konkani actors from Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts participated in the camp, according to a press release from the organisers. Demand to regularise contract workers

HUBLI: Members of KPTCL Vidyut Vitarana Guttige Karmikara Sangha and Karnataka Vidyut Sarabraju Kampanigala Guttige Naukarara Sangh will hold a protest march in Bangalore on June 9. Speaking to presspersons, K. Somashekhar, General Secretary of the Guttige Karmikara Sangha, said there are around 25,000 posts vacant in various electricity supply companies, but the Government is not keen on filling them. He wanted contract workers to be made permanent employees.— Staff Correspondent

College praised

MANGALORE: An inspection committee of the Union Government has expressed appreciation for the modern facilities at the Sri Dharmasthala Manjunateshwara Ayurveda College, Udupi. The committee, headed by its Chairman, Kulwanth Singh, praised the commitment of the Chairman of S.D.M Educational Society, D. Veerendra Heggade, in setting up such an institution. — Staff Correspondent

Power plant inaugurated

Bidar: The bagasse-based co-generation plant of the Naranja Sahakari Sakkare Karakhane was inaugurated on Monday. It has started supplying power to the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation at Rs 2.80 a unit. This will increase the revenue of the factory by 78 lakhs a month. The 8 MW capacity cogen unit is now producing only 3.5 mega watt (3500 units per hour) as it is running short of bagasse. This factory plans to increase the capacity to 14 MW, according to a press release. — Staff Correspondent

DSS dharna over teachers' issue

Bidar: The Dalit Sangharsha Samiti has threatened to stage an indefinite dharna if the Government does not supercede the board of management of the Kannika Parameshwari higher primary school which had dismissed teachers without consulting the Education Department.

The teachers began an indefinite fast in front of the office of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction. The fast entered the fifth on Tuesday. The DSS said that it will resort to picketing and dharna in front of the DDPI office if the board is not superceded and an administrative officer appointed within three days. — Staff Correspondent

Bidar: The Ganayogi Panchakshari Gawai Seva Sangha organised the Zilla Sangeet Utsav in Bidar on Monday. Junior singers and instrumentalists performed along with senior artistes. State award winner Shaikh Hannu Mian, Raghunathrao Panchal, Jagannath Nankeri, Manikprabhu Sonar, Basavraj Sheelvant, Basaiah Swamy Sali, Kavita Swamy Bampalli, Surekha Vaikuntha Datta Maharaj, Shivukmar Panchal, Dhoolappa Mudabi, Sangamesha, Lakshmi Swamy Bampalli, Narasimhalu Dappur, Basavraj Ptil Santpur, Anjana Kamalapur, Veerabhadrappa Pratapnagar, Sharanappa Sirsi and Lakshmanrao Acharya performed. — Staff Correspondent

Distribution of free textbooks

Bidar: The Department of Education began distribution of free textbooks and uniforms to children in government schools when schools reopened on Monday. All schools are organising Shala Prarambhotsava, a function to mark reopening. A function was one held in the government higher primary school in T Mirzapur in Bidar taluk. First standard students were greeted with sweets.

Minister to review water situation

Bidar: The Minister for Animal Husbandry and Waqf and Humnabad MLA, Mirajuddn, Patel will hold a meeting to review the water supply situation in Chitaguppa in Humnabad taluk on June 3. He will listen to peoples' grievances at the Humnabad tahashildar's office at 10.30, a press release said. — Staff Correspondent

Children taken ill after consuming seeds

Belgaum: At least 30 children of the government primary school in Chiknandihalli of Bailhongal taluk started vomiting after consuming seeds of a fruit locally known as "gavatala" on Tuesday.

Though the school is yet to reopen after the summer vacation, the children play in the school playground. It was around noon when the children started vomiting. Soon, the villagers shifted them to government hospital at Kittur. They were treated and discharged later, official sources said. — Staff Correspondent

Anti-tobacco day observed in Hubli

HUBLI: World Anti Tobacco Day was observed in the twin cities on Tuesday by several organisations and political parties. In Hubli, members of the Youth Congress of Hubli-Dharwad Mahanagar Zilla took out a procession and burnt gutka sachets and cigarette packets. The Hubli branch of Indian Medical Association, in association with Cipla, held a rally in which several doctors participated. Excise help centre

MYSORE: The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), Mysore Zone, in association with the Department of Central Excise and Customs, is setting up a Central Excise and Customs help centre at CII Mysore Zonal office on Thursday. The help centre will give clarification and advise on industry issues related to Central Excise and Customs. A Deputed Officer of the Central Excise will work from the CII office and clarify to members on policy and procedural issues. — Staff Correspondent

Poompuhar crafts mela

MYSORE: The Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd., popularly known as Poompuhar, is organising a crafts mela at the Institution of Engineers on Jhansi Lakshmi Bai Road in the city from June 1 to 15.

According to a press statement, the exhibition will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on all days, including Sundays. Poompuhar will allow a special discount of 10 per cent on all items displayed at the exhibition. — Staff Correspondent

`Teach English from VI std'

MYSORE: C.P. Krishnakumar, Kannada litterateur, has opposed the introduction of English in government primary schools from first standard as proposed by the State Government. Participating in a Meet-the-Press programme organised by the Mysore District Journalists Association (MDJA), Krishnakumar, who is popularly known as "CPK", said English should be introduced from VI standard. — Staff Correspondent

Move to extend holidays hailed

MYSORE: The Mysore University Private College Teachers' Association has welcomed the Mysore University's move to resume degree classes from June 13 instead of the originally scheduled June 1.

In a statement, the association president, K.P. Vasudevan, said the association had urged the university a month ago to reopen the degree colleges from July 1 in view of the extension of the previous academic year by 10 days. — Staff Correspondent

People's views sought on proposed bills

MANGALORE: The Mangalore Taluk Education Resource Centre (MTERC) and the Dakshina Kannada unit of Campaign Against Child Labour - Karnataka (CACL-K) has urged the people to give their opinions on the five Bills that the State Government is planning to introduce in the next session of the legislature.

These bills are the Karnataka Food Security Programme Bill, 2005; the Karnataka Rural Employment Guarantee Bill, 2005; the Karnataka Child Rights Bill, 2005; and the Karnataka Compulsory Primary Education Bill, 2005.

Dharam Singh must resign, says JD(U)

BANGALORE: The Janata Dal (United) has demanded the resignation of the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, in view of the adverse observations of the Karnataka High Court on the transfer of a "tainted" official, Hanumanthappa.

Mr. Dharam Singh has lowered the dignity of the office he is holding, and instead of implementing policies for welfare of the people, the Government is busy transferring officials, the JD(U) State unit president, B. Somashekar, told presspersons here on Tuesday.

The High Court has also handed down judgments which went against the Government in the Arkavathy Layout land acquisition and Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor project cases, he said.

JD(S) fears bogus voting

Bangalore: The Bangalore city unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) has alleged that the Congress candidate in the Chamarajpet Assembly byelection, R.V. Devaraj, is harbouring anti-social elements from places such as Hosur, Anekal and Kanakapura to indulge in bogus voting on June 2. It has also alleged that the Congress has distributed bogus voter identity cards in the constituency.

The bogus voters have been accommodated in hotels in the Fort area, Mavalli and Kalasipalyam, the president of the unit, Srikantamurthy, has alleged.

In a memorandum to the Chief Electoral Officer, the JD(S) demanded precautionary steps to prevent bogus voting. — Special Correspondent

Bidar: Sangamesh Nasigar of Bidar has been appointed member of the BJP State Yuva Morcha. The BJP State secretary, Raghunath Malkapure; the district president, Prakash Khandre; the general secretary, Babu Wali; and others have thanked the State Yuva Morcha president, C.T. `Congress will win both bypolls'

TUMKUR: The Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation, Oscar Fernandes, said here on Tuesday that the Congress will win the Shimoga Lok Sabha and Chamarajpet Assembly byelections. Mr. Fernandes, who was on his way to Shimoga, made an unscheduled stop at the house of a friend here. He told presspersons who met him that his party will win both the byelections. "I have no doubt in it."

He was accompanied by his wife, Blossom Fernandes, and a businessman from Bangalore. — Staff Correspondent
