Sydney: Recognising the Ricky Ponting-led Australian squad's hegemony at the top of the Championship tables, the International Cricket Council (ICC) awarded $500,000 to Cricket Australia (CA) on Tuesday. Accepting the cheque in Brisbane, CA chief executive James Sutherland paid tribute to the performance of the Australian team and the administrative bodies that support the players off the field. A CA release quoted Sutherland as saying, "Cricket Australia is honoured to receive this cheque from the ICC to reward the Australian team's position on the LG ICC Test and ODI Championship tables over the past 12 months. ``It certainly recognises the performance of the Australian team and our team management who play such a vital role behind the scenes,'' he said. `Off the field, we also have strong and dedicated administrative bodies at the National and State levels which provide tremendous support for the Australian and State teams.
Looking to the future
``Cricket Australia is committed to investing in the future of the game to ensure there are more opportunities for growth and access to cricket in the community and continued success at the elite level,'' Sutherland said. Hinting that Australia was in no mood to relax its grip, he said, ``The next five months offer an exciting period for Australian cricket, culminating in the Johnnie Walker Super Series in October which presents a great opportunity for the Australian team to test itself against the best players in the world.'' Australian player Simon Katich, present during the cheque presentation, said that the team was looking forward to the next five months. ``The LG ICC tables have Australia on top at the moment, but we are certainly not taking anything for granted over the coming months,'' he said. ``Our immediate focus is on defending the Ashes before turning our attention in October to the Johnnie Walker Super Series,'' Katich added. The $500,000 payment comprised $250,000 for leading the Test table and an equal amount for topping the LG ICC ODI table. It is the first time the ICC has made a financial payment to recognise the achievement. UNI
